LOCATION: Dunns River Falls, Ochos Rios, Jamaica
Dunns River Falls is one of the top attractions in the Jamaican area and based on my experience there I would definitely say don’t miss out on this incredible trip.
Dunns River Falls is fed by natural spring water which is rich with calcium carbonate. The area is considered a living phenomenon because it is continuously being rebuilt by the sediments in the spring water. This particular waterfall is one of the few travertine waterfalls in the world that empties directly into the sea.
The area was extremely crowded with five cruise ships in town however the crowds still seemed to make the hike up enjoyable. The general idea of the hike was to climb 1000 feet to the top of the falls, all through slippery water while holding on to everyone in your group in a human chain formation. Sounds difficult right?
As Lina and I started the tour our first thoughts were what did we get ourselves into?? However, the rocks were not slippery like we thought and the trek up was not difficult at all and only takes about 1.5 hours to complete. Maybe the fact that we had to go super slow to accommodate the 20 or so people in our group as well as stop several times to play in the falls.
Regardless the experience was an incredible amount of fun and definitely one I would love to do again, several times. There were some people there hiking up the falls without guides that I would enjoy doing just so I could hike up different routes. Seemed more dangerous but doable. Dunns River…I’ll be back for sure!!
Some interesting facts about the falls is that the area was used in various movies. The location was a backdrop for the movie “Cocktail” and a James Bond film “Dr. No.”
*Thanks Lina for accompanying me on this adventure!
WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?: YES! Several times over.
