While watching the show “The Bachelor” (don’t judge me) I saw that one of the dates took place at a salon offering a fish pedicure. The fish went to town on the women’s feet and looked incredibly creepy. Obviously I had to try it! The procedure: Dr. Fish Therapy. The fish are known as Garra Rufa fish and have been used in spas across Europe and Asia for awhile now. Originally from Turkey, the fish have been used for over 100 years to help treat skin conditions like psoriasis. Basically the fish are starved and it makes them feed off dead skin cells on your hands and feet to help exfoliate them. Sounds crazy! The Dr Fish practice was brought over to the United States in 2008 to the Alexandria Yvonne’s Salon. Since then, only a handful of practices have been allowed to open due to the strict sanitation laws involved with the fish. A lot of states have banned it due to this, however the ones open must adhere to very involved sanitary practices to ensure the safety of the clients using the fish tanks.
Lina and I arrived at the salon for our fishy appointments. There were four chairs each provided with its own tank of flesh eating fish. Putting your feet in definitely takes some determination, as allowing fish to eat your feet isn’t exactly the most natural thing. As I put my feet in, the fish swarmed in and began feeding. It tickled a little, but it was more numbing than anything as the fish kissed all over my feet.
I’m trying to think of an experience to compare it to, and can’t. It’s fish eating your feet! Overall, the experience was weird, creepy, insanely intriguing and a lot of fun. Yes, I just said fish eating my feet was fun.
After the 20 minutes of flesh eating, we had our regular pedicures done. I didn’t notice a huge difference in my feet on whether they were smoother now or not, but maybe more fish procedures equal better results. I would recommend getting this done since it’s a very bizarre experience. Don’t worry; leaching is not next…or ever!
* Thanks Lina for accompanying me on this awesome adventure.
WOULD I DO IT AGAIN? It was interesting enough to do again.
