LOCATION: Old San Juan, Puerto Rico
Don Facundo Bacardi Masso founded the Bacardi company in Cuba in 1862. However, he brought it to Puerto Rico in 1936. While the headquarters is located in Bermuda, the rum distillery in Puerto Rico is considered the world’s largest.
The easiest way to get to the distillery is to take the pier 2 ferry in Old San Juan for $1 round trip and then a $3 taxi to the distillery. The tour was free and included two free drinks, which makes for an amazing tourist destination. My free drinks were a rum punch and an arctic grape rum and sprite, which was fantastic.
The tour took you around to a historical building with various artifacts on how rum is made. Sadly, they didn’t let you take many photos since the stuff was so old, and we never were allowed to go inside the actual distillery, only drove by.
Afterwards, we were taken back to the bar area where we could finish our free drinks, or shop in the gift shop. Located at the distillery site were some stray dogs. They were extremely sweet and loving and I really wanted to bring one of them home.
Becky decided to feed them hotdogs to make sure they had a decent meal that day. While the tour was a little boring at times, you can’t miss the opportunity to see such a large distillery and for FREE. I’d recommend doing it on your own, and not through a tour group.
*Thanks Becky for accompanying me on this adventure.
WOULD I DO IT AGAIN? Sure! It was free afterall
HOW TO DO THIS: Tour groups want to charge $50+ for this. However, it was a 50cent ferry ride, and a $3 cab ride there. Go to Pier 2 in Old San Juan.
