One of the most exciting things I thought of when getting to go to Germany was experiencing this traditional Bavarian Beer Hall. I definitely was not let down. The beer hall was gigantic and there were two other Contiki groups there as well. A few people from all the groups had bought traditional lederhosen in Munich during the shopping trip. I wish I had bought one now. They were $100, but how often can you say that you own a REAL AUTHENTIC outfit for Oktoberfest?! Lesson: Never second guess buying something that is traditional to the country…you will regret it!

The beer hall was filled with many women and men serving the liters of beer. I knew they could lift a lot, sometimes around 7 liter steins in one hand. However, it was even more impressive once I saw how heavy those steins really were. I attempted to lift just 3 of them and that was a struggle with 2 hands!

We were served pork knuckle, sauerkraut and this potato side. The pork knuckle had a caramelized touch to it and made it quite tasty. I’m not sure what the potato side was but it looked like a squishy ball. The consistency was horrible.

After we all received our food and beer, the women of the beer hall put on a traditional German song and dance performance. They danced around with flower wreaths and made music with bells. It was very entertaining. Every 10 minutes or so, everything in the hall would stop and the German beer toasting would take place.

Everyone would stand with their beer, say the chant, cheer with the others at the table and drink. The German beer chant was a salute to your health and well-being and went like this…

Ein Prosit, Ein Prosit, der Gemütlichkeit

Eins, zwei, drei, g’suffa!

Overall, the experience I had at the beer hall was exactly how I pictured it to be. I would love to do this again and hopefully enjoy it even more since I won’t be sick.

*Thank you Shiran for accompanying me on this adventure

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?: I don’t think anyone should go to Germany and NOT try something like this! What a great experience!

Contiki Travel is HIGHLY recommended. I would do this all over again a million times. www.contiki.com
