As part of this extensive tour, we were able to be a part of a Mayan ritual. We walked through a dark cave to get to the ceremonial place. Mayans believe these underground caves to be very sacred and hold ceremonies there because it is an entrance to the spiritual world. The cave was filled with stalagmites and stalactites and crystal clear water. Every sound echoed through the walls. We met up with a local Mayan man, called a Shaman, who would perform the ritual. Around him, there were several candles lit and flowers lying on the ground. He had us form a circle and filled a cup with some herbs. He lit the herbs and blew it out creating a steam smoke. He then spoke some words in his native language and held the cup in the air. He placed some ashes in our hands, which we placed over our hearts. This was to purify our heart and soul. He then raised the smoke cup up some more and said more phrases. The ceremony was to purify our skin and mind. The steam bath represents the womb that purifies and then offers rebirth. The experience was very humbling and nice. Afterwards we celebrated by eating a nice lunch made by some local Mayan villagers. The chicken empanadas were amazing.

* Thank you Troy for accompanying me on this adventure, being the biggest supporter in what I do and always being there to take the pictures for me.
